Eddie Murphy - Like or dislike?

I liked him in the 80's movies, like Beverly Hills Cop, Coming To America, The Golden Child etc but since then I think he's soooo awful! I don't know why he continues to act, tbh (imo).

    What are your thoughts?

Eddie Murphy - Like or dislike?

I think 48 Hours is still his best movie, closely followed by Beverley Hills Cop, and then Metro. Metro had some silly moments, but I think it could have been a very good movie, if not for some lame attempts to turn it into a comedy.

And it's probably the closest Murphy has come to doing a serious role (though I have not seen Dreamgirls).

And to that end, I have never understood why Murphy has never done any serious acting roles. Most comedy actors have at least given it a go, even if not always successfully.

I think he has it in him to do it, but I get the impression that he has either decided, or been badly advised to stick to what he is best at...only the law of diminishing returns came into play.

Basically, people got fed up of his schtick. He made some attempts at 'sophisticated' comedy in films like Boomerang and Distinguished Gentleman, but after Nutty Professor it seems that he has been content to plough the gross-out/kiddie market type of comedies.

He is fast becoming the Steven Seagal of bad comedies...and will soon end up in Direct-to-DVD hell.

Eddie Murphy - Like or dislike?

He was phenomenal during the early to mid 80's and was a genuine box office hit maker alongside Arnie and Tom Cruise. It's amazing to think he was only in his early 20's when he made BHC,48 Hrs and Trading Places.

His act wore thin by the 1990's and he didn't seem to have that fire anymore until the remakes of Nutty Professor and Dolittle.Since then he has mostly lived off forgettable kiRAB comedies and his drawing power has all but gone. His ill faited attempt at music is better best left to history.
Last I heard is that his potential return to form (BHC IV) has possibly been cancelled.

The man seriously neeRAB a new agent.

His problem is that nearly every film he does is basically done as an Eddie Murphy vehicle. I reckon he could have made a much more credible acting career from the late '90s onwarRAB if he had concentrated on some more challenging supporting roles. Maybe. It is only the 2000s where he's made dodgy decisions, but he's had a good ride with the Shrek films (which is not over, Shrek 4 is coming next year).

Trading Places will always be one of my favourite films. For that IMO he's forgiven for anything!

I like all his old films (although controversially, i actually don't like 48 Hrs!). His standup performances are outright brilliance, particularly 'Delirious'. I admit though that i haven't watched a new film by him since the Nutty Professor sequel.

Eddie Murphy - Like or dislike?

I'll always have a soft spot for Eddie but he has made some proper shite
His greatest moment was 48 Hours imo. He still makes the odd gem, Life was a great film.

Can't agree - because Richard Pryor had been there and done that years before Murphy, and Murphy borrowed very heavily from Pryor's comedic style. It was ok, but Pryor had already set the benchmark by then.

48 Hrs, Trading Places & Beverly Hills Cop was an excellent beginning but sadly 25 years of dross followed.

I see that Beverly Hills Cop IV is in the pipeline for 2012.
