I've been trying to install Microsoft Office 2010 for a couple of weeks now. It gives me the same error every time, telling me to verify that I have permission to access a .dll file. After some searching of tech forums, I found a large number of people had had success after uninstalling their .NET frameworks, reinstalling them, reinstalling Windows Installer and then apparently Office was installing without complaint. I tried this, but to my dismay the .NET framework 3.5 needed for my machine (HP laptop running x64 Vista) will not install. After further searching, I found someone who reported that disabling .NET framework 3.0 through the Control Panel had allowed her to install 3.5 without issue, but now when I attempt to uncheck the box, the whole application freezes and nothing happens.

Can anyone tell me:
1) how to disable or uninstall .net framework 3.0 so I can try to install 3.5 or
2) a better way to handle the .net framework situation in general?

Is there something obvious I'm just missing? Any help would be appreciated.
