Let me start this out by saying that I'm not even a fan of Oldies in particular. But I've got to give John Lennon credit for belting out an amazing ballad in "Twist and Shout."
A few facts about the song...
"Twist and Shout" was written and originally performed by the Isley Brothers; it is not a Beatles original, although most people forget this fact (so it truly is an Oldie).
The song was the most popular closing act for The Beatles during the early years (62-64). John Lennon sang the lead, with Paul McCartney and George Harrison providing the backup. The vinyl that it was released on became the greatest selling EP of all time in the UK.
But that's not why it exhibits the greatest vocals of any rock song, in my opinion. Some people have accused him of screaming out the lyrics, but I don't see the problem with that... it's true: he did scream out the lyrics, but the track was recorded at the end of a 12 hour session -- by that time, John's voice was absolutely shot... but the amazing thing is that this actually worked in his favor.
It's one of those crazy moments, where a "bad" situation turned into a "brilliant" one. Download it and see what I mean.
