Why does water always taste so nasty when you leave it in an old plastic soda bottle?

I try to save money by cleaning out an old soda bottle and filling it with tap water and putting it in the fridge the night before but sometimes if I keep reusing the same soda bottle it starts to get a really weird nasty taste in it. Any idea what the cause of this is?
