The had rifles, pistols, artillery and tanks in WWII. The rifles had bayonets fixed to them for close range fighting. Die your mean those? As for spare time, they mostly spent it having flea jumping competitions. and trying to find a fresh place to dig a latrine.

They didn't have a great deal of spare time.
Battles tended not to run to timetables, have lunch breaks or mid morning coffee breaks.
