Hi guys, my iPod Touch recently got stolen, and instead of buying a new one, i was thinking of getting an iPhone 3GS from eBay or something. I'm currently on AT&T and have texting, but locked myself out of the data charges by calling and terminating them since I dont use the 3G service.

I was wondering if it is possible to buy a locked AT&T iPhone 3GS and unlock it to avoid incurring data charges that I wont use any way.

I've read numerous tutorials and had friends suggest that the device must be jailbroken, then unlocked and reverted back to its carrier with a new SIM card (from my current SAMSUNG smartphone).

Is this possible and will the iPhone be fully functional afterward (updates, iTunes connectivity as well as full voice and texting service as per my contract on my current phone?

Is it even possible to use the iPhone without a data plan so that I can actually GET TO the business of unlocking it?

Also, will incur any data charges in the process of unlocking and jailbreaking?

thanks in advance...
