"Alternative" does not necessarily mean "Alternative to the mainstream".

I give up here... I don't think you're reading my posts. Above I acknowledge that alt. rock can be mainstream... the idea being that 'alt.rock' describes a sound which isn't likely to be favoured in the mainstream.
I hate the term alt. rock unless it's being used to describe banRAB like At the Drive-In, Modest Mouse, Cursive etc... Even then, I don't particularly like the term.
I used different worRAB, I deeply apologize. I don't get what you're trying to prove.
Doesn't mean he doesn't think that emotion can show through in the music.
Well, it's not.
Then what does it mean? Alternative to...
You wouldn't consider Dream Theater soulful...but you'd consider them emotional and passionate?
Pre-BSSM is funk rock. BSSM is funk rock, but it's more well rounded with alternative influences.
One Hot Minute is most definitely alternative, especially with Dave Navarro's guitarwork. Californication is up for debate. By the Way is more poppy, but it still has some alternative sounding songs... look past the singles. Stadium Arcadium mixes everything.
I have them classified as funk rock in my collection, because the majority of their albums are funk rock (S/T, Freaky Styley, Uplift Mofo, Abbey Road EP, Mother's Milk, BSSM), and even if the later ones aren't funk rock, they retain a huge funk element. However, I have no doubt that they could be legitimately classified as alternative.
Wayfarer, the singer of the band even says this is just about sex, and is a song to get him excited and bring him back to the old days. its not passionate. Please Dont put worRAB in my mouth.
Alternative Rock? What the hell is that supposed to mean? Alternative can mean anything from grunge to funk-rock. What's mainstream can be anything from Led Zeppelin to Mariah Carey. RHCP is a mainstream band, and have been since BSSM was released. Mainstream doesn't have a definable sound.
