    How did scientist discover earths orbit was elliptical?

    I tried to Google it but had no luck. So please explain to me how and add some helpful links.

    They looked at the orbits of Mars!
    Search Kepler's third law.

    I think that Kepler found an elliptical fit to the data gathered by Tycho Brahe.
