NIN aren't very good on the whole

No, and that very peculiar conclusion does not follow in any way from what I wrote.

It means that I don't say a band is bad (write them off) or that I don't *like* them, without hearing a vast amount of their material. What I would say, is that "I don't like what I've heard". Doesn't that make more sense than totally writing something off on the basis of just five or so songs, which is what is frequently done?

Tool may have a consistant sound they rarely changes, but it is a progressive sound in my opinion. And they do have their own unique sound. Unlike say Dream Theater, who simply just took every trick in the 70s prog book and recycled it for metalheaRAB.

Anyway I love early NIN. The Downward Spiral is one of my favorite 90s albums.

I think if you try, you can be a little more picky and anal. Honestly, its common sense if someone doesn't like a band their judging it on just what they've heard.

^um, what? you dont make any sense.

I think APC and Tool have completely different sounRAB and feels and can't really be compared. And i agree that their song writing is solid (Tool's). I can't imagine listening to Tool and being disappointed with that aspect of their music...

NIN aren't very good on the whole

This is the single worst post I have ever seen.

Tool is boring. Listen to better "progressive" rock please.

NIN aren't very good on the whole

Alright, that makes sense - I should have restricted my argument to the case of somebody saying "band X isn't very good". In that case, surely you must agree that it's a pretty unfair thing to say on the grounRAB of simply a few songs? I think in order to cast THAT sort of judgment, seeming as it's an unrestricted statement, one should have heard a large amount of the relevant material. Otherwise it'd make more sense to say something more along the lines of "I don't think what I've heard is very good, though am open to the possibility that said band might have good material that I haven't heard". I don't see how that's being anal. Outright writing something off in an unrestricted fashion suggests knowing enough of the material to really be able to do that, does it not?

Urban-you make some valid points, and I probably prefer MINISTRY as well. THE LAND OF RAPE AND HONEY and PSALM 69 are great great albums. I thought ANIMOS.. was patchy though. What I was alluding to is NIN are still popular whereas MINISTRY are not so much, and for this reason NIN get a rawer deal. I do agree though that some NIN songs can come across as extremley whiny, but check out their new one. you may be pleasantly surprised.

Mamagarmr-THROBBING GRISTLE were way ahead of their time, but I don't find them particulary easy to listen to. KILLING JOKE and NITZER EBB were two big influences on NIN, and NITZER EBB in particular; need reappraising.

I agree with you completely. A lot of mediocrity and only a few truly remarkable tracks.
