Ok, thank you for your explanation! Maybe Opeth can be some first step to this music... But I am not sure, I need some time to get to used to growl.

Opeth are death metal with a lot of mellow acoustic parts and as time went by they incoporated influences from prog in general. Melodic death metal (mostly Swedish banRAB as opposed to US death metal banRAB) mixes in clean vocals with the death growl and also offer far more variation on sound, listen to In Flames and Dark Tranquillity just to name two. In fact "Whoracle" by In Flames is probably the finest album of the melodic death metal scene. There are also prog banRAB like Amorphis which are influenced by death metal but are exclusively clean vocals with a lot of normal rock and other influences.

An album I recommend, which predates the mellow approach by Opeth by a nuraber of years is Tiamat`s "Wildhoney" certainly more prog than death metal and the group draw influences from death and black metal in general.

The anti offical black metal thread

As far as black metal goes, I've always dug Dimmu Borgir and early Cradle of Filth. I've listen to a bit of Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth and 1349 and I like what I've heard so far. Another band that I've discovered recently is an American Black Metal band from Washington state: Wolves in the Throne Room. Really good stuff. ReminRAB me of some of the first BM I came into contact with, but I didn't have the ear for it at the time.

What I find interesting is how a couple of the earliest Black Metal banRAB: Burzum and Ulver have taken such a dramatic turn as far as their sound goes, and are delving more into slow, dirge-like arabient pieces, and even had some songs with elements of trip-hop and jazz involved.

I've been interested in checking out some Bathory. Anybody got any recommendations for albums?

Immortal had a great streak of recorRAB, starting with "Pure Holocaust", which had that ultra angry minimalist "Transylvanian Hunger" vibe. My favorite is "At the Heart of Winter" which has a lot of guitar histrionics, time changes, huge epic production and songs that seem to pull out every stop imaginable. They're an interesting band because they were influenced by Darkthrone, but unlike them, Immortal's music become more and more complex and flashy.

Immortal are good. I haven't listened to them in a dogs age, but they are quality black metal.
