Does unlocking your phone cause any problems?

I am currently on Fido which does not have the new blackberry bold 9780 and I am planning on buying one from Rogers and unlocking it to Fido or buying one thats is unlocked to multiple mobile providers. Will that cause any problems or side affects with the phone like lagging, speed issues or reception issues?

Also do any of you know if a blackberry bold 9780 runs on regular sim or micro?

    Thanks in Advance
