I would really like to get into martial arts, I love trying new things and as a person i want to stand on my own and be able to defend myself when the time comes. But i am a little clueless on the types and what would be best for me.

I am female, 5'6, a little overweight (which i plan to fix before i start martial arts, but feel free to suggest either way), even though i am a little overweight i am used to exercise and working out. i used to play softball and marching band was a huge part of my life, and now i am currently in a extracurricular activity that requires me to dance.

can someone please help me by suggesting some of the types that would fit me best? or at least better than most.
