On my 1997 chevrolet 1500. It has a 4.3L 262 cubic inch V6 vortec motor. on the air intake, there is a box behind the throttle body that says "vortec" on it, and also has a passageway into the engine. what is the purpose of this box?
heres a picture of the vortec 5.3L V8, looks EXACTLY the same.

What is the black box on the air intake that is closest to the firewall?
no it is not the air filter box. the "air cleaner assembly" is at the end of the intake duct work on the opposite side of the Mass airflow sensor, and is secured to the right inner fender.
