"Offline" S60 (3rd Ed) Map and Weather Programs?

i just picked up an E50 and was wondering if there are any weather and mapping programs that do NOT require Wi-Fi or GPRS/EDGE.

i am coming from PalmOS, so for example, Mapopolis and WorldMate can have the maps and data sync'd to memory card for "offline" use.

the S60 equivalent of WorldMate seems to require GPRS/EDGE/Wi-Fi.

any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

TomTom and Route66 are two mapping programs that store the maps on the memory card.

As for weather, there's not, cause how would you update it?

Symbian is very different from WM5 and Palm in that it doesn't do the whole ActiveSync thing, where you download everything when you sync and then view it all later. The platform as a whole is all about connectivity and such.

I use Mobile Weather which asks if it should update when you start it. So I guess you can say no..

yeah but then it's going to be outdated in 2 days and therefore useless.

thanks for pointing that out. i've been to AAS and other S60 sites, but if you have a "First Steps" tutorial link or something, that would be great.

i'm coming from the land of Palm/WM an i am not used to paying for data. i prefer syncing data and using it "offline".

maybe the E50 was not the way to go for me

I've kinda started a blog for people just like you, follow the link in my post. There's a features page link on the right column, the first one is a real basic walk-through of s60.

Keep checking back, the whole point of that blog and mainly that page is a guide for Symbian "noobs." Including how to use your phone for day-to-day tasks, and how to get the most out of it. My laptop went on the fritz this past monday, i'm basically formatting and reinstalling windows, so it might be sunday before I can get the next feature up, but if you have a request for something, please post it here or email me at [email protected].

I think if you give Symbian a shot, yeah, you'll have to get over the data thing, but there's so much more you can do with Symbian that you can't do with either of the other two platforms I think you'll stick around. I myself have tried switching to WindowsMobile twice and came running back.
