E61 - Sync irritant...help please

I have set up my E61 to sync with my laptop's Lotus Note every hour. It works fine but the only problem is that every time this sync process start the phone jumps to the sync screen and shows some data transfer and finally a beep with "sync complete", which disappears 1 sec after popping up. If one happens to be using the phone during those 5-10 secs than its a major irritant. Is there a way to force the phone to do it in the background (and beep up only if there is an error). That's how it used to be in my previous 6670 (S60 2nd edition)
