Well they didn't have a choice, my Aunts, Uncles, and Ma were forced to go to those schools.
Where they were punished for speaking Navajo, and such other things.
It was a slow and brutal process, that either ended up with the children dropping their cultural identity, or with them loathing the American "melting pot". They even tried mandatory "Urban Relocation" which they forced them to move to cities like Seattle and LA.
Of course, something about Navajos is they'd always come back. Example:
White BIA Guy: We'll send you to LA where you'll work and live
Navajo: Sure (I'll just come back home after a year anyways...)
One incident on the Reservation was when Navajo parents got angry and beat up a BIA Agent who was sent to collect their children to send them to Boarding Schools.
