How can I tell if its a fake chinese phone?

Hi,
I am looking to buy a new phone off of ebay or gumtree...
How do i know if the phone is real and not somebody trying to scam me and giving me a chinese copy phone?

Is there specific marking I should look for on iphones and blackberries which the real ones have and the fakes do not?

If they claim the phone is new and are selling it at more than 15% off the list price, it's definitley fake

The fakes look just like the real thing - it's not till you use it that you find out it's fake
