Why does the Toyota Prius have a higher mpg in the city than on the...

...highway? -- MORE BELOW --? Can anyone fill in this chart? Even approximately, theoretically, or hypothetically?? [I have heard a reliable but anecdotal report that a 2010 Prius gets up to 50mpg around town, but only around 42mpg on the highway.]

    TYPICAL SPEED../...ONE OR MORE....../...STEADY DRIVING
    DURING TRIP......../...STOPS PER MILE../...[NO STOPPING]]

    30 mph....../......___ MPG?....../.......___ MPG?

    45 mph....../......___ MPG?....../.......___ MPG?

    60 mph....../......___ MPG?....../.......___ MPG?

    75 mph....../......___ MPG?....../.......___ MPG?

I'm guessing the explanation for the lower "highway" mpg is related to both the regenerative braking, and the increasing wind resistance at higher speeds, but I am looking for as detailed of an explanation as I can get.

~ thanks for your answers ~

you'd have to call toy to see if they have those numbers, or be real lucky and find some one who has done those evauations.

and in the U.S. the 75 mph/mpg numbers aren't in the mix. toy wouldn't spent the time evaluating mpg on constant speeds that aren't normally seen on U.S. highways.

the explanation of lower hwy mpg is directly related to not using the gas engine at low speeds.
