I lasted until Season 12. After that, the only reason I still watch the Simpsons now is a lack of anything else to do on Sunday nights. Why can't FOX just ask Matt Groening to make a brand new show if they want ratings so bad?

Well...there was Futurama. And we all know how FOX treated that little gem.
Simpsons will obviously continue to go on until they can no longer afford the VA salaries and the show becomes unprofitable.
Are we at that point yet?
There's a decline?
8 is the last truly great season, though you definitely start to see the cracks in the show's hilarious facade
9 is OK; it's still pretty funny, but no longer interesting and brilliant (it's the last dvd i brought)
10 is very poor, with repetitive plots and horrid characterizations abound
11 is as awful as any season that came after
Season 8 was the last consistantly good season. Season 9 was mostly good, but it was the first season I'd give two "Fs' to and Homer was becoming an ass, instead of the slow, grumpy loveable oaf.
When Scully took over, he beat the show to death with his Homer show antics and when Jean took over, Jean's been injecting the Simpsons corpse with drugs. To his credit, he's doing a better "Bernies" to the Simpsons than the guys were doing to "Bernies" in "Weekend at Bernies".
