Brilliant, surreal and imaginative French/Slovokian Sci-fi fantasy for adults from animation auteur Rene Laloux is one of my fave animated movies since i was 10 when i rented it from one of my local video stores at the sci-fi section and showed me animation isn't all for kids.
It's been considered a movie for stoners and pothead but not really despite trippy imagery as there is philosophy and ideas in this movie including environmentalism on nature vs. the enemy. The french language version is the best of the two versions but the dub from 1973's New World Pictures release is good with 2 excellent vocal artists like Hal Smith and Janet Waldo.
This movie has went on to be one of the most critically acclaimed animated cult movies of all time as it shows us stunning Monty Python and Yellow Submarine style animation, a Pink Floyd-esque soundtrack and pure originality to it. This movie is another one of those movies that influenced James Cameron's Avatar since he is a fan of animation especially Rene Laloux as you can see in this movie.
Now if Criterion can put this on Blu-Ray
