Is it realistic for me to get in to medicine?

    GCSE's:
4 A* - English Lit, English Lang, Biology, Core Science
7 A - Chemistry, Physics, Additional Science, Maths, Statistics, Citizenship, Psychology
    3 B - R.E, Drama, French

    AS Grades:
    2 B - Chemistry, Maths
    1 C - Biology
    1 D - Physics

    Work Experience:
Shadowing a general surgeon - surgery, outpatient
    Volunteering - library, school reception
Tutoring - key stage 2 children

Lots of other extracurricular things, drama, outward bound (similar to duke of edinburgh) etc.

Lots of medicine summer schools: Cambridge, Kings, UCL, Nottingham
My AS grades were low as I missed a month and a half of college due to having an appendectomy.

    I will be applying to:

Kings - extended medical degree programme (50 places)
Southamption - medicine BM6 foundation year (30 places)
Nottingham - medicine with foundation year A108 (10 places)

I will be sitting my UKCAT later this week.

Does anyone have any advice considering applying to these courses. What are the chances of me getting in?

This is totally off topic, but are you absolutely 100% sure that medicine is your CALLING?

If it is then okay, but if it isn't and you could imagine yourself doing something else then don't go into medicine.

You should read medical student blogs they speak the truth....

You have mitigating circumstances, so your low AS Level results should be fine. You might have to retake some bits though, so you can get the A overall or at least be predicted As, because when I applied for Kings EMDP, they only considered people who were predicted all As, even though it's meant to be for people of lower grades. But because of the competition last year til now, I think this will be the same for the others as well. So I'd suggest getting your grades up, speaking to your teachers as well and seeing how they can help and if they can predict you the As you need. Good luck!

    It depends...

As they are high standard unis, it will all depend on references and personal statements. They will see summer schools and that will be in your favour, and as long as your tutors can vouch for you and say that these AS grades were out of character, they may give you an offer. In the end, if they do give you an offer, you would still have to get probably 3As overall, which may require you to retake AS units, so keep that in mind.

    Hope this helps.
