Local and federal law enforcement officials arrested 70 people and recovered six teens during a three-day crackdown on child prostitution.
The effort was part of a national initiative dubbed Operation Cross Country, in which local, state and federal law enforcement officers set out to arrest pimps and rescue children forced into the sex trade, FBI spokesman Simon Shaykhet said Monday.
Busts were made at high-end and low-rent hotels and motels in Detroit, Sterling Heights, Madison Heights, Troy and Southfield.
"It's clear that child prostitution and sex trafficking do not just occur somewhere else on the other side of the world," Shaykhet said.
Nationwide, 79 children were recovered and 104 suspected pimps were arrested in the operation, which ran Thursday through Saturday.
Locally, five girls and one boy, ages 13 to 17, were recovered. Among the 70 people arrested were five suspected pimps and 22 suspected customers.
In addition to the FBI, State Police and corrections officials, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Macomb Area Computer Enforcement and Detroit, Roseville, Southfield and Highland Park police participated in the operation.
No information on the people arrested or their expected court dates was available Monday.
