Is it hard to teach yourself violin?

I'm 17, and I've just finished an ABRSM diploma in piano, so I've gone through theory, and I can read both clefs. Now I'm finished with the piano, I was wondering whether I'd be able to teach myself violin - I have a piano to check tuning, but I also have perfect pitch so I'd know whether the note was in tune or not. I was thinking of teaching myself violin for a few months before I hit university, where I can get proper lessons, but I'd quite like to have the basics sorted first. I won't be at home much for the rest of the summer, so I can't really get lessons over the summer.
How feasible is this? I've done grade 5 theory etc, and I definitely want to learn a new instrument, but my only prerequisites for it are that it's in either treble or bass clef, and it's non transposing. Violin seemed like the natural option.
    What do you think?

As someone who is not classically trained, nor someone who knows his way around any stringed instrument (played drums), my opinion may not be the most professional, but here it is. My old band mate who was an incredible guitarist and could play the piano as well tried the violin and said that it was by far the most difficult instrument he'd ever attempted to play. In addition to the complex nature of playing, the logistics themselves are quite difficult as well.

This is not to say that it's not possible, but if any instrument would be hard to teach yourself, it would probably be the violin.
