late talker doesn't mingle with other kids?

My 4 1/2 year old son started talking late say around 3 plus. He is in pre school, pretty much for 10 months now . His vocabulary has improved . He does talk to us, but what he wants to not what we ask him. Even if we try to make conversation, usually he talks out of track, doesn't stick to the topic. Usually, talk about his toys . We can not really hold the simple conversation . He can not explain even the smallest detail. I noticed that he doesn't talk to his school friends and he can hardly understand his teacher in the group time. If he is told something face to face, he understand it. I am not sure whats going on. I contacted the speech therpy in school, they says he will pick up by 1st grade. He is friendly and polite kid, but don't see him mingling with other kids in school. Please help I am worried, where is the lack in his development? What should I do about it? Thank you.

That could go worse if you wouldn't give your son more attention. Bring him out most of the time, allowing him to see as much people as possible. This would make him more comfortable with people around. Bring him to parks, mall playground or just anywhere where he can play with kids of his same age. It would develop not just his speaking but as well as his confidence.
