In ancient times, people thought that God made the universe. Most of the people think like that today also.

By far the most popular theory in science today is the big bang theory, the idea that the universe came into existence at a certain point in time roughly 15 to 20 billion years ago.

Now you must be asking, "Are there any other theories for the origin of the universe other than God and Big Bang Theory? "

Now I will explain......a little bit lengthy.

Those are the only ones we know today that work for the different demands placed upon the explanation by society. Many religions no longer see the scientific explanations as being in contradiction to traditional religious stories. Only a small, vocal, minority of literalists refuse to accept any other story than what they feel is offered by various sacred writings. It is also true, however, that if you were to ask any of the 6 billion people on this planet today, very few would be able to give you the scientific account, but would be able to recite verbatum their traditional religious story which they were taught in childhood. This isn't meant to disparage religious stories of Creation. Only to acknowledge that we have a very long way to go as scientists in making the rest of humanity aware that Big Bang theory even exists.

This is a very complex question that deserves a serious answer, because there are so many people who place a greater emphasis in their lives on God and the biblical explanation for our existence. However, it is also true that the vast majority of religious beliefs today have found a very easy and workable way to take our scientific understanding of the physical world, which is enormous and very deep, and to elegantly weave it into the traditional explanations for how God created the physical universe.

Big Bang is the premiere scientific theory of the evolution of the universe, with no other competitors that have survived all the many restrictive observational tests. You will find other FAQs at this site that describe the many other scientific challengers to Big Bang theory, along with the reasons why they have 'fallen from grace' in the ongoing search for a better description of cosmic evolution.
