Well Abraham Lincoln was quite the shady character, although not much about his "bad" side is known. In order to preserve the union, he realized the the border states must be preserved at all costs. Thus, he initiated many laws in the border states such as suspending habeus corpus and suspending much of the freedoms in the bill of rights. Also, Lincoln tried not to attack the confederates first....

His actions were both unconstitutional and illegal according to constitutional law.
