manual or automatic?
If its manual is there excessive play in your clutch pedal? Meaning how far from the floor board is it before you feel resistance.

Noises and where they are coming from, can be tricky to figure out. In some cases, what you think is a "whine" or abnormal noise is actually the normal operating sound that particular model makes! If it is an abnormal sound caused by a mechanical problem, it might well be coming from somewhere else; such as CV joints or even wheel bearings.
Check the trans fluid level, and look for signs of burning or overheating. (The fluid color is darker than normal). It only makes noise WHILE you are SHIFTING? It's a clutch problem! Most likely the release bearing ("throw-out" bearing). If so, you might as well do a whole clutch job; since you will have to take it all apart to change the bearing anyway, and the disc and pressure plate are probably worn enough to justify replacing them.
