Which 'cowboys & Indians' movie is a closest reflection of early American history.?

I've seen scores of westerns where the Indians were portrayed as savages with no redeeming qualities till Kevin Costner's movie came out and opened my eyes. Despite a few flaws it appears more historically accurate version and true to life than any other I've seen before.

I wonder which brave director would tackle such a film. Maybe Clint Eastwood. He seems headed in that direction.
