What is a good introductory book about space and astronomy?

I'm 28 and have come to the sad realisation that I know next to nothing about the solar system/planets/space travel/moon landings etc.

Can you advise me on a good introductory book to this subject? Nothing stupidly basic, but I don't want pages of complex astrophysics either...

I'd recommend an introductory college textbook; most don't assume you know more math than algebra and a little trig. There are literally hundreds out there - so your local library probably has a few that would be fine to get started with. Or you could take a course at a local community college.

+Eri makes some good points. I didn't really have the time to take a course, so I used a book called Discovering the Universe. It was made for people who are NOT science majors and was extremely informative. Although it incorporated a bit of physics and advanced mathematics, you could easily skip that and continue readiing and get a good understanding of what was being presented. I highly recommend it.
