Sony a300: What's a good flash unit for it?

I have a Sony a300 and whenever I take pictures inside I generally get a lot of dark shadows in the back of my pictures. I am assuming it is because of the lighting.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a good flash unit that isn't ridiculously expensive?

I would still classify myself as an amatuer photographer, so I don't know all the 'technical' terms for things. Does anyone know why I always get the dark shadows in my pictures? If I turn the flash off the lighting looks fine, but then the object I am shooting generally turns out blurry no matter how still I am.

I think the Sony DSLR's have a proprietary hotshoe design, so using a non-Sony flash in manual mode would not be an option.
