If I buy an iPhone and use the software to unlock it, can I use it on US Cellular?

I want to buy an iPhone and use the software to unlock it and use it on US Cellular. Can I do that? If I unlock it does that mean that the GSM is unlocked and I can use it on any wireless carrier?
