Have you tried anything by Brian Jacques? He is a children's author but, the books can really be enjoyed by people of all ages. I'm 27 years old and I still read them!
He has a whole series of books based on a fantasy world of animals. The ages of the books say from 9-12 but, they are written in such a fashion that they are NOT babyish.
Here is a link to Amazon of the first book in the Redwall series called "Redwall": http://www.amazon.com/Redwall-Book-1-Brian-Jacques/dp/0441005489/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_ttl_in
    Good luck and happy reading!

Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson
It's awesome!!! I'm obsessed with the characters.
Believe me, it'll get you hooked by the first page, it's a page turner, classic James Patterson.

It's about 6 kids, oldest 14 youngest 6, are on the lamb because evil scientists want them extinct. So they have many adventures, and all of them have at least one special power, besides being able to fly. Action like a video game, drama like a novella, fantazy that's could be true if you'd think about it and a hint of romance all in one.
    I think you'd enjoy it.

4 books so far in the series.
    Maximum Ride: the Angel Experiment
    Maximum Ride: School's out Forever
Maximum Ride: Saving the World and other Extreme Sports
    Maximum Ride: The Final Warning

I won't bore you with more details, sorry. I'm just in love with this book!
