How do I tell if my watermelon in my garden is ripe?

Growing watermelon for the first time. They look good, but I have no idea how to tell if they are ripe. I know how to pick one out at the grocery store (tapping on it and all that), but these are a small variety, and I don't know how to tell ripeness on the vine. Suggestions?
    Thanks!

It is ripe when the vines lets go of the melon when you gently tug on it. If the vine won't let go of the melon, it isn't ripe yet.
