Cultures and Groups: Are you the type of person...?

It depends on my mood and the body language from the other person. If I'm in a good mood and the person looks friendly enough I would smile & nod my head, or say good morning/evening. If I'm not in the mood to talk then I avoid eye contact.

@ Shaniqua. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY but I'm not like that. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't raised to talk to every single person either, you have to pick & choose because there are a lot of crazy ppl out there. But I still am respectful and polite. No disrespect ma, but maybe your way of thinking is the reason why A LOT of ppl think that NYers are so impolite and rude. Almost everytime someone realizes that i'm from NY, I get: 'wow, you actually have some manners'. I don't think there's anything wrong w/ a simple 'hi'...

In between. If the person is close, a "hi" is appropriate. But if there is some distance, a simple smile works better. I like to at least acknowlege other people. Better all around -- they know I'm not up to something devious, and they may remember seeing me if something happens.

i'm from the deep south and we speak to everyone, but since i moved to Atlanta women look at me like I'm crazy when I speak so now I'm beginning to be B.

I am sorry, but I have problems and things to do. I can't spend all day making idle small talk with strangers. "Hi" is a door that could lead to a long-winded conversation. For some reason people like to tell me all this personal stuff about themselves, I guess they think I care.

I'm B. But if i'm engaged, i'll smile and say hello. I'm really a nice person, but I have always had a weird feeling about eye contact. It makes me feel too vunerable sometimes. It's the window to the soul. When I have to (like at work or taking care of business), eye contact is pretty effortless. But if i'm just going about my way, I tend to have tunnel vision, though extremely alert.

It's a southern thing. It doesn't exactly require a full conversation, just a simple smile and a hello. How hard can that really be? It's better than trying to distance yourself from the rest of the world because pretty soon you'll find yourself on here asking people why you don't have any friends and why you're so alone...think about it.
