A good lawyer vs a bad lawyer?

I don't understand. Lets say divorcing parents hire 2 different lawyers. One hires an expensive family law lawyer and the other hires a cheaper (legal aid?) lawyer. But both lawyers are into family law. So why would the more expensive lawyer be better that the other one? Or let's not take the price into consideration. How can one lawyer be better than the other if they both work with "family law"?

Better lawyers charge more money, they have a better reputation and record in court (better results in cases victories, etc).
