    a glass vessel of volume 10 to the power -3 metre cube is completely filled...

    ...mercury at 0 deg. centigrade if it is heated to 100 deg. centigrade the amount of mercury that will spill out is(cubical expansion coefficient of mercury =1.82 x 10 to the power -4) ( cubical expasion coefficient of g= 0.1 x 10 to the power -4)

    And what about the surface tension? If we must ignore the surface tension than we have to realize that every dimension will get linearly expanded.

    V=a b c
    change in every dimension is
    da=Lp a (T2-T1) and

    dV= da db dc
    dV= Lp^3 (T2-T1)^3 (abc)
    finally
    dV= Lp^3 (T2-T1)^3 V
    or since we have volumetric coefficients and a glass container is involved and will also expand we can write
    dV=Lv1(T2-T1) V - Lv2(T2-T1) V
    dV(of mercury)= (Lv1 - Lv2)(T2-T1) V
    where
    Lv1- cubical expansion coefficient of mercury
    Lv2 - cubical expansion coefficient of glass
    V- volume
    T2- T1 diff in temperature
