Why oh why is religion endemic in all the cultures of the world?

Pretty much.

Humans evolved to be smart enough to pop existential questions but did not have enough tools to answer them. We then resorted to the fallacy of "events must be started by beings with intent" because that's what can easily be observed in daily lives. This eventually turned into sets of beliefs in immaterial agents (aka deities aka gods). These beliefs married with authorities' interests and gave birth to religions.

I think that your ego is so huge that it is having you belive that you are smarter than 99 percent of the world population. I will take it a step farther and say that even though you are a failure at life and everything you have ever done, your ego makes you think it is not your fault.

Whose fault is it that you are a failure then?

I'd say people are concerned about the world coming to an untimely ending and are trying to relate this to a higher being and if they are going to heaven/hell. Religion is just faith in something more than our earthly life and where we'll end up in our afterlife. So people are panicking about how they've led their lives and what life really means.
