Can I find a replacement for my Olympus' cable in an electronics store?

I use an E-510, and I cann't seem to find the USB cable that one uses to connect the camera to the computer (ALAS!). CompactFlash card readers seem to be expensive and tricky to find in-stores.

Does anyone know if a) Olympus cameras use a standard type of USB (the end that connects to the camera), and/or b) whether or not replacements are available in electronics stores?

Your olympus camera has a multi plug that combines USB, Video, and remote all in the one socket, so there is no "off the shelf" replacement cable available. Can I suggest you keep such items in a camera bag so you know where they are in future.

It's possible to get replacements from Ebay dirt cheap. As for card readers difficult to find and expensive? I had to buy a new card reader recently my old one not liking SDHC cards, I picked one up from ASDA (Walmart) for £3.99, I'd hardly call that expensive (yes it has a CF/MD slot on it)!

No, you are not going to easilly find a USB cable for this model camera. The Evolt 510 used a non-standard USB connector.

I have included two links that show the difference. The first is a closeup of your Olympus, the second is a Sony which uses a standard 4-pin USB connector (right bottom.)

CompactFlash readers aren't expensive, or at least should not be. But since fewer cameras use CompactFlash these days, they are harder to come by in the average store. I would suggest you order either a new cable or a card reader online, or both. I think Olympus will be your only choice for the cable.
