They are scripting languages. used for quick programs that does specific tasks and run by an interperter instead being compiled and linked to another file before running. Some of the scripting languages can be used to construct large applications (programs) like python. Python has an interesting feature of what is like a command line where you can test commands and programming statements. However, big and large (commercial) software are mostly done using the solid programming languages like C++ and java.
