put in gear truck, truck sits still for a few seconds then all of a sudden it starts to move

Low on transmission fluid, but make sure you fill it with the correct ATF. Check if it use Mercon or Type F.
For all I know "ford...truck" could mean 1979 F-150 or 2001 F-350.
