I'm totally new at this, but I sort of just come up with a melody while I play around on my keyboard. From that melody, I use a similar chord progression for the verse parts, and use the melody as the chorus. I'd recommend having a music writing program such as Guitar Pro 5 and write down your ideas as soon as they come to you. I also have a keyboard in my room, so if I wanna try something out, I don't have to go too far...
