When did discussing ones salary in public become less than vulgar?

I'm skint and have no salary as such just now to discuss. But I was always brought up to believe discussing personal finances in public was not etiquette

I'm skint so therefore I'm vulgar. But I'm seeing a one-upmanship of who earns the most in CE and tbh, does it matter? We can all have opinions on the news whatever the income.
Deighton.Dont apologise. I'm not having a go at you in particular, if at all.
i just dont see why how much anyone earns has any bearing on your opinions of the news or is of any relevance to this site as a whole.
    maybe I'm naive.

SHAMBO!!! This is is all your fault, you little fire starter.

Why is it ok to say I'm skint but not I'm loaded?Surely both are vulgar? :/

Looks like we all fell for that little wind up by the papers.

Absolutely - you can have opinions on everything and a person interested your salary first doesn't have an opinion worth bothering about.

I don't see that "one-upmanship" here at all - if anything it's the other way round.

I have absolutely no qualms at all about revealing my salary* - I work in the public sector so anyone who knows what job I do can look it up on the internet anyway! I do think it's vulgar to boast about how much you earn, but I don't see the harm in simply being open about it. In many ways it's healthier and more likely to lead to a fairer society.

    * I earn £16320 before tax, and my total annual take home pay (with NI and tax taken off, and tax credits added on) will be just shy of £14500. I think I'm pretty well off compared to many people I know.

I think to generalize is ok. I do not care to be specific. Material wealth has never been a motivation for me anyway.

sorry I mentioned mine because someone was boasting about how big there's was, and I posted an approximate figure which was lower, for some reason i did it, can't recall what came over me to mention it.

anyway job not secure, who knows what round corner.

Good luck in future, something great may come your way. I've been in the pit, half way out of the pit, currently consider myself prosperous and fortunate really.

    Over and out.
