right now the ford ranger is one of the best small trucks on the road and they give a lot less problems than any other truck on the road,i own a ranger and an older model s-10 and i wouldn't put the s-10 through what the ranger has been through, their almost bullet proof,as far as the engine and transmissions go they last forever, but i also like my s-10 it has the 4.3 in it an it will run circles around the ranger as far as speed goes, but the ranger is a lot tougher truck than the s-10 is ,especially on hauling things around, good luck.

The Ford Rangers are a lot better than a S-10. They have Mazda drivetrains, and are very dependable, and get good mileage. I have a 94 with a 2.5 4cylinder, 5 speed, 2wd, with 230K, gets almost 30 mpg, and a 93 extended cab 3.0 V6, 5-speed, 4wd, with 220k on it, it averages 20 mpg. They are both almost bulletproof, but if you live where there is ice and snow, the 2wd is worthless in the snow, so I drive the 4x4 in the winter!
