    How do you say "they were arguing" in french?

    it's not imparfait, so its not etaient.

    its passe compose because what im saying is past tense. So how would you say that?

    I agree with TheMoop. It should be imparfait.
    Here are some potential verbs - discuter (ils discutaient) and débattre (ils débattaient) are great for a debate-style argument, and if it's more of a quarrel, you could try se disputer (ils se disputaient).
