    In old Taino culture...?

    what is the significance of the hummingbird ?

    hummingbirds were associated w/ rainbows because of their color. Rainbows were believed to form a bridge between land, sky, and the underworld...the three spheres of Taino cosmos. Animals that could travel freely between the different realms were revered. Guani is taino for hummingbird...Guanin was the Taino god that symbolized authority...so the word for hummingbird could also be used to describe someone of noble ancestry.
