Well, the number of subs you go with will have an effect on volume, not depth or clarity. The more subs you have, the more volume you will be producing, plain and simple.
If you are looking for a deeper bass, there are a few things you can do. You can go with a ported box for your subs, this gives them a slight low-end extension, which will deepen the bass, and it also increases the volume, by "doubling" up the sound.
If you want all deep bass, and don't care much about mid-bass, you can go with a bandpass box, which will focus the subwoofers energy into a specific frequency band, which is usually set in the lower 30s, and this will give you that massive booming sound you hear coming down the street. Be warned though, this kind of bass gets annoying after a while, because it only plays one sound loud, the rest of the frequency range is muffled and fuzzy.
As far as 15's go, stay away. If you have ever done any shopping for high-end car audio, you will notice that NO high-end car audio manufactorer produces a 15" or 18" sub in their high end line (JL, Morel, Rainbow, DynaAudio, Pioneer PRS, Alpine F1, Pioneer ODR) and this is for a specific reason. A 15" sub is usually the magnet structure for a 12", with a 15" dust cap added, so you arn't actually getting a stronger motor structure, or even a better spider, just a bigger surface, so what you end up with is a sub that will only produce sloppy, low-end frequencies, and that is not capable of producing the mid-bass frequencies that are most prevelant in most forms of music.
get a 15. u can get them so cheap these days, even cheaper on ebay. my 15 loves long deep bass guitar best
