Is religious studies required for a truly liberal education?

In a recent poll, the Bible actually ranked number one on the list of books college English/ Literature/ Writing profesors wanted students to have a basic knowledge of. You can't understand Shakespeare, or Herman Melville, or Mark Twain without knowing the stories in the Bible. Less than 8% of public high schools have any sort of religion related course. (biblical, or world religions)
Religious Studies is a single course. Not a plural. Grammar's required for 6th grade. You're proud of your miseducation?
None of us, religious or irreligious would want devotional bible readings in the Public Schools. But, if students were educated in Public Schools, the teaching of the specifics of your religion in church and sunday school would be much better.

    No.

    Grammar is, though. Example:

    Are religious studies required....
    Is a religious study required....

Since religion has such a significant impact on American and European history and culture, I certainly do not think it should be excluded. When you read the classic works of literature they are bathed with religious connections that many do not get because they are not fully educated.

This does not demand a priest or preacher doing the teaching and it can be studied purely as an academic subject, much like the Greek/Roman mythologies are.
