Question about a 94' Ford F250 need answers!!?

We have a 94' Ford F250 and it was running fine except it made a slight noise that sounded like a card in wheel spokes to me almost, then the other night my husband went up a slight inclinement and it shut off and it will start but sounds like tires spinning out in mud and it will lock into the gears but not perform any of those essential functions we've got a lot of guesses and no answers but since we can't move it we are at least trying to figure out what it most sounds like could be the problem before we have holes in our pockets with towing and everything. Anybody got any ideas on what it could possibly be?

the first thing i would do is change the transmission fluid and filter if it,s automatic. if it don,t make a noise sitting still then it could be something in the steering.
