i got a iphone 3g v3.1.2
modem firmware 5.12.01

i did update 3.1.3 and activated with carrier sim.(O2)
and i jailbreak with Spirit
but i put any other sim NO NETWORK
only use O2 sim.

you must to unlock the iphone.
run cydia and add to source repo666.ultrasn0w.com and install ultrasnow 09.3
reboot phone and its done.

Restore your iphone with iOS4.

here is the link for unlocking without wi-fi...but make sure you jailbreak your iphone before unlock....after unlock reboot your device twice
