If wife applies as new customer, can we port our numbers?

Hello to all the knowledgeable folks out there!

My wife and I are on AT&T's Family Plan. I am the account holder, she just has the second phone. My contract expired recently, and although AT&T has some sweet deals for new customers, I cannot get them because I am an existing customer

My wife can certainly apply for a new AT&T family account. Question is, can we port our existing numbers to that account?

Number portability applies to transferring a number from one carrier to another. It does not apply within the same carrier. What you are proposing is not permitted. If your wife got an account in her name, you have to get new numbers. If the line your wife currently uses is under contract, there would be early termination fees on it. That might exceed the savings for getting a new account.

    Hi Earl,

Thanks for the reply. I had hunted around quite a bit for the answer to this question, but no one seemed to know what you've so concisely written.

My wife's phone is also out of contract, so even though there'd be no ETF, we need to stick to our current numbers. This means that, unfortunately, we cannot avail new-customer pricing with AT&T.
